Drivers on East Platte Avenue have been rubbernecking this week to get a good look at the tangle of metal sitting outside The Springs Funeral Services. On the mess, a wrecked car donated by Colorado Springs police’s Drive Smart program, is a sobering message: “Make the smart choice, don’t end prom night with us.” The brainchild of funeral home director Terri Flores-Brown, the scene is directed at teenagers who are in the midst of prom and graduation season, one of the most statistically dangerous times of the year for high-schoolers. “I just think reality sinks in when you see the visual,” Flores-Brown said. “We all know kids are going to be kids, but we just hope before they get behind the wheel that they remember this.” The funeral home worked with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to get the wrecked car, which has to be put away every night to evade vandals. “Here you have a business, whose business it is to bury people, saying, ‘Don’t end up here,’” said Pam VanOverbeke, state victim advocate for MADD. “If it isn’t getting the kids’ attention, it is getting the parents’ attention who say, ‘I don’t want my kid to end up there.’” Funeral home workers have watched as cars slow and people take pictures of the car, Flores-Brown said. The car will be on display at The Springs Funeral Services, 3115 E. Platte Ave., through today and may reappear in May as graduations approach
