Shelby M. Shafer, Funeral Director
Shelby is the daughter of Arlen and Terri Flores-Brown. She is a 2006 graduate of Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona and earned her Associate of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Pikes Peak Community College. She worked as an intern with us for 4 years and received her Bachelors in Mortuary Science degree from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 2014.
She was recently awarded by The Selected Independent Funeral Homes' Educational Trust as recipient of the Selected Leadership Academy Scholarship. She will use the scholarship to participate in the Selected Leadership Academy, a two-year structured program offered exclusively to members of Selected Independent Funeral Homes.
Shelby enjoys reading, movies and hiking.
Tom Vien, Funeral Director
Tom, a well-known funeral director in the Colorado Springs area for the past 25 years, has now joined our ever-growing firm.
Tom was raised in western Minnesota, attended the University of Minnesota and is a graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago. He has always loved the hospitality and service industry. He grew up in his family’s bowling center and later, while in college, was associated with the Minneapolis Golf Club and Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minnesota.
Since 1978, Tom has devoted his life and career to serving families in Minneapolis, Chicago and Denver. He was associated with Welander-Quist-Davies Mortuaries in Minneapolis, and Werness Brothers Funeral Chapels in Edina and Bloomington, Minnesota; and the Hanekamp Funeral Home in Northbrook, Illinois.
Tom was also associated with the Moore Howard Funeral Chapels in Denver, the Olinger Mortuaries in the metro Denver area and most recently, with the Shrine of Remembrance, in Colorado Springs, where he has served local families for more than 25 years.
Mr. Vien is a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and serves on a number of teams there. He is planning a significant event there in preparation of the 500th anniversary of the posting of the Thesis of Martin Luther. He has been past congregational president of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. He is a member of Via de Cristo, Sons of the American Legion, the Foresters and Above Par Golf Leagues. He enjoys entertaining, bowling, and most of all, serving families in need of a source of comfort and strength.
His greatest interest at home is his constant companion, Granite, a black royal standard Poodle.
He brings to The Springs Funeral Services team, a rich history and expert combination of Funeral Service, Funeral Home Management, Cremation, Burials and Pre-planning. His excellence and professionalism has now accompanied him to this community’s leading and preferred funeral service organization.
Jamie Callaway, Funeral Support/Arranger
Jamie was born and raised in Colorado Springs and attended Wasson High School. She then attended Colorado State University where she received her BS in Agricultural Business.
Upon graduation she moved back to Colorado Springs, attended Cosmetology school and worked at a local salon for 10+ years.
Jamie always had a passion for the funeral business but was hesitant on how to go about beginning a career. In 2013 she began working for Dignity Memorial as part of the outside sales team, teaching others about pre-arranging. She then moved to inside sales at Swan Law Funeral Directors helping with at-need grieving families. Having the opportunity to learn and grow, she took a position with the administration at Swan Law doing multiple tasks at the funeral home for families.
In May of 2015, she accepted a great opportunity with The Springs Funeral Services. Serving and helping families is Jamie’s passion.
Jamie loves to spend time with friends and family, travel, golf, go to sporting events, ride around in her Jeep, concerts, fish, dine out, BBQ, camp, and be with her best friend, her black lab mix, Piper.
Chris Donahoue, Funeral Director
Chris was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. Chris graduated from Greene County Tech High School in Paragould, Arkansas. A few years later he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 10 years as a Hospital Corpsman. During this time Chris was stationed in the Norfolk, Virginia area.
Chris is a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Chris moved here to Colorado Springs from Vancouver, Washington in August of 2012. He has worked in the funeral industry since his arrival in the Colorado Springs area. His experiences have included funeral directing, preparation, and director of crematory operation at area funeral homes. Chris comes to us with over 8 years of experience in the funeral service industry, he graduated from Mt. Hood Community College in Portland, Oregon with an Associate’s Degree in Funeral Service Education. He holds a Funeral Director/Embalmer license in the state of Washington.
Chris is has been married to his wonderful wife for over 13 years. He, and his wife, enjoy the company of their 6 children. Chris loves to spend time with his family, reading, and the occasional video game competition with his children. He is an associate member of the Marine Corp League.
Randy Brungardt, Funeral Director
Randy Brungardt was born in Garden City, Kansas but moved to Colorado at the age of 4. He grew up in the Greeley Area and worked in his parents' grocery store, located in Kersey, just east of Greeley, where he graduated from Platte Valley High School. He attended the University of Northern Colorado while working at St. Mary's Catholic Church, and graduated with a degree in Psychology, with minor emphasis in Communications and Philosophy. While attending college, Randy, earned his Doctorate Level Certification in Religious Education from the Arch-Diocese of Denver.
Out of college he worked as Administrator of Greeley Catholic School till its closing and then moved with his wife to Colorado Springs. He worked at the Volunteers of America Youth Treatment Center as a counselor before accepting a job at Dove-Witt Family Mortuary as a Funeral Director and Business Manager. He purchased a Funeral Home in Monte Vista, Colorado, Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, where he and his wife lived for the next 5 years.
After selling the Funeral Home, Randy moved back to Colorado Springs and began working as a Youth Minister at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He took the position of Director of Youth Ministry at St. Joseph Catholic Church 2 years later and worked at St. Joseph's for the next 23 years as the Director of Religious Education and Liturgy, which also included working with and assisting those who had lost a loved one.
Randy loves having the ability to work with and for, families and individuals who are in need and being back in the funeral home business. He lives with his wife Terri of 31 years, and his 5 children. Randy enjoys singing and has held several lead rolls in Community Theater. He is a past president of the San Luis Valley Arts Council, past Vice-Chair of the Monte Vista Head Start Program, and past Deputy Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 13099.
Nancy Kowalski, Prearrangement Specialist
Nancy moved with her family to Colorado Springs from Tucson, Arizona because her father was active military in the US Air Force, she graduated from CSU with a BSBA.
For nine years Nancy worked for Service Corporation International, the parent company of five Colorado Springs Funeral homes that operate under the Dignity umbrella. She represented all five funeral locations and one cemetery as a family service counselor and preplanning arranger. Later, Nancy became a funeral arranger with Olinger at Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery in Wheatridge, CO.
After leaving SCI, Nancy used her degree in business and finance to become a Financial Advisor working with Edward Jones Investments and LPL Financial. She enjoyed helping families with financial decisions especially in the area of estate planning.
Her passion has been to assist in preplanning funeral/cremation arrangements. So when the opportunity presented itself in early 2014 to join The Springs Funeral Services as a Prearrangement Specialist her career came full circle.
Nancy lives in Manitou Springs where she enjoys outdoor activities, traveling, golfing, gardening and entertaining friends.
She is a member and on the board of the American Legion Auxiliary in Manitou Springs and also a life member of the VFW in Security, CO.
